What We Do
C

Programs

MAA has 14 grant-funded programs, across three categories:

Curriculum Resources

Aid faculty in the training process for pre-service teachers currently in undergraduate school.

Outreach Initiatives

Enable faculty to fund projects aimed at reaching underrepresented groups in mathematics.

Professional Development

Increase the skills of current college and university faculty, support early-career mathematicians, and provide resources to teachers.

2023 Program Highlights

In 2023, we distributed $612,856 in award money through our programs.

We also introduced the Neff Outreach Fund, supporting students from rural, Indigenous, and historically underserved communities.

Additionally, we launched OPEN Math, an online professional development program for undergraduate math faculty. Our Distinguished Lecture Series made a comeback with free discussions on YouTube.

We also collaborated with students for the Online Undergraduate Resource Fair for the Advancement and Alliance of Marginalized Mathematicians (OURFA2M2), providing valuable resources and networking opportunities.

Additional 2023 Program Highlights

Camp for Mathematical Queries

The MAA Programs department was excited to partner with B Waid from The Queer Mathematics Teacher to offer its first LGBTQ Outreach program, Camp for Mathematical Queeries (CMQ).

This program offered a five-week virtual mathematics enrichment program for LGBTQ+ students entering grades 9-12. The camp was designed specifically for the LGBTQ+ community to provide a space in which LGBTQ+ and mathematical identities are affirmed as interconnected entities, central to the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Grantee Highlight Stories

The Grantee Highlights Stories was created to showcase the outstanding work of MAA's Outreach Grantees. These stories capture the impact that project directors have made with the outreach grants and offer advice to those interested in running their own math outreach program. Read our highlight stories and learn more about MAA's Outreach Initiatives.

NREP 20 Years Celebration

For 20 years, the MAA has been the only professional association to host REUs focused exclusively on all underrepresented groups through its National Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program (NREUP).

In 2023, we were excited to celebrate NREUP's 20th anniversary at MathFest. We were joined by Kaleab Abebe and Britni Wilcher, who participated in the early years of NREUP as student researchers. They spoke with current NREUP students and shared how participating in this program helped shape their careers.

MAA Project NeXT

Project NExT supports recent PhDs in math with professional development services.

It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities.

Since its inception in 1994, over 2,300 Fellows have benefited from support from Project NExT.

2023 Program Highlights

New Fellows & Noteworthy Progress

In 2023, we welcomed 92 new fellows into our programs. We achieved noteworthy progress in fostering equity and inclusion, with 11% Hispanic/Latinx and 3% Black/African-American, as well as 41% female and 51% male representation among our fellows.

Meeting Educators’ Needs

We also continued our long tradition of innovating to meet NExTers' needs better.

We heard a clear need for more personalized support post-pandemic—many new faculty were struggling. The Teaching Support groups we’d started a year earlier were a perfect way to provide needed support. We quickly pivoted from discussions focused mainly on teaching to having more wide-ranging discussions that met more particular needs.

None of that would have been possible without the fantastic work of an army of facilitators, keeping the groups small enough to function as true support groups.

Competitions

In 2023, MAA ignited the minds of young mathematicians globally, orchestrating competitions across borders from the US to Romania. These included:

American Mathematics Competition (AMC): This program helps America’s educators identify talent and foster a love of mathematics through classroom resources and friendly competition.

Edyth May Sliffe Awards: The Edyth May Sliffe Awards for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle School and High School are given annually to middle and high school mathematics teachers who have done outstanding work to motivate students in mathematics by participating in one of the MAA American Mathematics Competitions.

European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO): This hybrid-format mathematical olympiad for girls began in 2012. The US team traveled to Hungary to participate in person.

Romanian Master of Mathematics: The 13th annual competition for students at the pre-university level is held remotely in Bucharest, Romania.

USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO): A six-question, two-day, nine-hour essay/proof examination.

William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition: The preeminent mathematics competition for undergraduate college students in the United States and Canada consisted of two three-hour sessions.

Young Women in Mathematics Awards & Certificates: MAA awarded $13,449 to the 33 prize winners and 647 certificate winners.
